Cannabis shops ramp up security after uptick in crime

SEATTLE - Cannabis businesses said they are taking more security measures after seeing an increase in crime in King and Pierce counties.

"We have very big steel planters, they weigh hundreds of pounds each, so it would be very difficult for a vehicle to smash into us," The Green Door Seattle manager Eduardo Beaumont said. "It's our deterrent."

Beaumont said he noticed many robberies at pot shops involve the suspects crashing their cars into the business to break in.

That is similar to an October robbery in Tacoma, where surveillance video from both inside and outside of Zips Cannabis showed a car ramming into the cannabis shop at a high rate of speed.
